Hi, I’m Gregory Dineth Perera, and I’m currently a Primary 6 student at ACS Primary. I’d like to share a little about my journey through primary school, the experiences that shaped me, and the passions I hope to continue pursuing in the future.
Right now, I have many interests that I really enjoy exploring. I’m especially passionate about chess, mathematics, music, and coding. But these interests didn’t all appear at the same time. I discovered them gradually throughout my primary school years. I actually began my primary school journey at Woodlands Ring Primary School, where I first discovered my love for mathematics, science, and English. I enjoyed solving problems, learning new concepts, and challenging myself during lessons. Those subjects made learning exciting for me.
In Primary 3, I took the selection tests for the Gifted Education Program, and I was very thankful to be admitted into ACS Primary in Primary 4. However, the transition was not easy at first. The workload became much more demanding, and I also had to travel around 45 minutes to an hour to school every day by public transport. Managing projects, group work, and studies taught me important lessons about perseverance, resilience, and teamwork.
Outside of academics, one of my biggest passions is chess. I first started playing chess in kindergarten, and I continued developing my skills through my school’s Chess CCA. In 2024, I was honored to represent ACS Primary at the NSG Championships in the under-10 category. Competing against strong players was both exciting and humbling because it reminded me that there is always more to learn and improve on. In 2025, I also participated in the National Age Group Championships and managed to place within the top 25%.
Another interest that I developed was learning the guitar. In the beginning, it was quite painful and difficult to play, especially on my fingers, but I kept practicing and persevered. By Primary 6, I managed to reach Acoustic Guitar Grade 5 and Music Theory Grade 3 with Distinction, which were something I felt really proud of.
In 2025, through the CEP program, I was introduced to Python programming using Pygame. I found it amazing that just by writing a few lines of code, I could actually create games and interactive projects. Since then, I’ve started building small Python projects on my own, such as a calculator and a number-guessing game. I really enjoy the problem-solving and creativity involved in programming.
Last year, I also worked on an individualized research study project where I investigated the sugar levels of snacks sold in my school canteen. This project allowed me to combine science, research, and real-world problem-solving, and it pushed me to think more critically and independently.
Looking ahead, I hope to continue developing my interests in chess, music, and coding in secondary school. At the same time, I’m also curious about something very different. The field of law and justice. I would love to learn more about how courts work, how laws are created, and how justice and equality are upheld in society.
My journey through primary school has taught me that learning goes far beyond textbooks and classrooms. There are many opportunities to grow if we are willing to step out of our comfort zones, stay curious, and keep trying even when things are difficult. I’m excited to continue learning, improving myself, and discovering new passions in the years ahead.
